The "Isle of Islay" (pronounced: Eye-la) is a small island in the southwest of Scotland. It is often referred to as the Queen of the Scottish Whisky Isles and is the most popular among them. The Isle of Islay is part of an archipelago west of Scotland, known as the Hebrides. Islay is the most fertile of these islands. The largest town is Bowmore, with just under 900 inhabitants. In total, only about 3,500 people live on the island. Whisky production, alongside agriculture, is the most important economic sector. Islay is its own whisky region; it belongs neither to the Islands nor to the Highlands. There are currently eight active distilleries on the Isle of Islay: Bunnahabhain, Caol Ila, Kilchoman, Bruichladdich, Bowmore, Laphroaig, Lagavulin, and Ardbeg - furthermore, the brands Smokehead, Octomore, Port Charlotte, and Ileach. Islay Single Malt Whiskies are most distinguished by their unique peaty taste, as the fertile land of the Isle of Islay largely consists of peat bogs.
