The Smokehead High Voltage brings true high voltage to the palate: intense peat from Islay and 58% vol. make it a real heavyweight.
Smokehead Mystery Malt
The Smokehead High Voltage is an intense single malt whisky, distilled on the island of Islay. It is one of the so-called Mystery Malts, meaning those where the distillery is not known. However, the name says it all: Smokehead – Full of smoke and Islay's peat. High Voltage – High tension! It was bottled at 58% vol., so it brings a lot of energy to the glass.
The bottler Ian McLeod
Smokehead Whiskies are bottled by Ian McLeod Distillers. The company is one of the four largest independent bottlers of Scotch whisky. "Independent" means that they are not limited to releases from their own distillery. Nevertheless, one distillery belongs to Ian McLeod Distillers. In 2003, the Glengoyne Distillery in the Highlands was acquired by the bottler. In 2011, the Tamdhu Distillery in Knockando was also acquired. It had been shut down a year earlier. However, under the new owner, production could be resumed in 2012.
Ian McLeod Distillers was founded in 1936 by Leonard Russel. At that time, they primarily focused on blending and exporting whisky. Today, Ian McLeod Distillers plays in the premier league of bottlers and can draw on a large number of casks. These are bought from the distilleries and remain there for the time being until blending and bottling takes place.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Breathe in and feel the onslaught of the spirit hitting your senses and your nose starting to tingle. Intense peat and smoke, the sea air, oatmeal, pure vanilla, and toffee.
Palate: A burn from the hot spirit and the mouth fills with smoke. It feels almost thick with an oily character before becoming softer and creamier. Then notes of nuts, salt, and citrus.
Finish: The mouth is almost shocked, numb, and tingling. Beneath the smoke, which slowly fades, something sweet beautifully blends in, leaving a salty sharpness. Tasting Notes by Smokehead
