"The idea behind the Glenfiddich IPA Experiment is certainly unusual, but we pursued it with passion. We really wanted to experiment with the aromas to see what we could develop from it." - Malt Master Brian Kinsman on the Glenfiddich IPA Experiment.
Pale Ales were already being brewed in the mid-18th century. The term "Pale" served to distinguish them from the typical dark English ales. A particular variant of Pale Ale was especially suitable for export to the British East India Company: The India Pale Ale had a significantly higher hop content and higher alcohol content, making it more stable for longer and thus better equipped for the long journey. Later, this beer style found many followers in Europe and North America. However, the popular IPA was later almost completely pushed off the market by higher taxes on strong beers in favor of light beers. Meanwhile, India Pale Ale is back in vogue and enjoys great popularity again today.
Even today, the valley that the visionary William Grant carefully chose for his distillery exudes the same charm as it did at its foundation. The towering roofs of the oldest building, the malthouse, bear witness to centuries of tradition. As the last single malt distillery in Scotland, Glenfiddich is still entirely owned by the founding Grant family and is one of Scotland's largest single malt producers. The water for the Glenfiddich distillery comes from the Robbie Dubh spring. To prevent possible contamination of the valuable spring water by factories, the Grant family acquired the entire surrounding land through which the spring flows.
Tasting 1
Color: Full gold. Nose: An elegant interplay of fresh green apples, Williams pear, and spring blossoms. Accompanied by aromatic hops and fresh herbs. Palate: Dynamic, with a strong citrus note, followed by creamy vanilla and a hint of fresh hops. Finish: Lingering sweetness with an aftertaste of green hops. Tasting Notes by Glenfiddich
Tasting 2
Color: Deep gold. Nose: An exceptionally fresh nose, with rather wine-like notes: aromas of Chardonnay, perhaps Sauternes. Some typical Glenfiddich characteristics emerge. Blood oranges. Toffee. A hint of yeast. Green apples. Palate: You taste hops, yeast, and malt, but the whole thing doesn't feel too young. Citrus. Blood orange. The texture is not heavy, rather silky. Toffee. A little vanilla. Very creamy. Grassy-straw notes. Chaff, then coffee-like bitterness, a little like a creamy latte. Fresh bread. For the finish, the maltiness and hop notes return.
