Founded in 1826, the Glendronach Distillery is one of Scotland's oldest distilleries, nestled in the heart of the Highlands. Known for its traditional methods and the use of sherry casks, Glendronach has earned a reputation for complex and full-bodied whiskies. With the Glendronach 10 Year Old Port Wood, the distillery introduces a special bottling that benefits from a second maturation in port wine casks.
The Glendronach 10 Year Old Port Wood first matures in American oak casks before undergoing a secondary maturation in Portuguese port wine casks from the Douro Valley. These port casks impart its special character, providing a deep red color and a unique, fruit-driven flavor.
Through this double maturation, this single malt achieves an intriguing balance between the whisky's natural sweetness and the rich fruit aromas from the port wine casks. This cask combination allows for a harmonious array of aromas, ensuring a well-rounded taste experience.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Aromas of dark berries and plums unfold on the nose, accompanied by notes of honey and a hint of spicy oak. A gentle scent of vanilla and subtle port wine sweetness rounds off the aroma.
Palate: On the palate, the Glendronach 10 Year Old Port Wood is full-bodied and smooth. Fruity notes of blackcurrants and raspberries harmonize with subtle hints of chocolate and cinnamon. A touch of almonds and spicy oak adds additional depth and structure to the flavor.
Finish: The finish is long and warming, with a subtle sweetness and hints of spices that gently fade. The fruit aromas linger pleasantly, inviting another sip.
The Glendronach 10 Year Old Port Wood is a single malt that appeals to both lovers of fruity aromas and fans of classic Highland malts. The secondary maturation in port wine casks gives it an exciting depth and complexity.
