One of the most famous rum specialties from Colombia is undoubtedly Dictador Rum 12 Years. It is produced in the traditional Destilería Colombiana in Cartagena de Indias, a city with a rich history. This distillery was founded in 1913, but its roots go back even further. An ancestor of the founder came to Colombia in 1751 to strengthen trade between the then-colony and the motherland Spain. Thanks to his energetic and resourceful nature, he was given the nickname "Dictador." He developed a great passion for making rum, which his descendant took up, thus founding the distillery and creating the Dictador Rum 12 Years brand.

Dictador Rum 12 Years is produced using a continuous distillation process in a stainless steel still. In contrast to most other rums, where molasses – a byproduct of sugarcane processing – is used as the raw material, the raw material for Dictador 12 is so-called sugarcane honey. This is created during the first boiling of the fresh juice and gives the rum a slightly different flavor note. After being bottled in barrels, this special rum then matures for a full twelve years in used oak barrels.

The maturation period achieved gives this exceptional rum a strong amber color with a slight reddish tinge. The aroma is intense, revealing notes of caramel, honey, dry seeds, as well as roasted coffee and oak. When enjoyed, a gentle taste of caramel, cocoa, and a subtle note of coffee and honey unfolds, accompanied by subtle nuances of oak.
