The first 10-year-old Ballechin from the house of Edradour matured from 2003 to 2014.

The Ballechin spent most of its 10 years in ex-bourbon casks. Edradour emphasizes that the casks are used a maximum of twice. For completion, the whisky was then allowed into ex-Oloroso sherry casks.

Tasting 1

Nose: Woodsmoke, lime marmalade, and hints of lye – if I didn’t know this whisky was made far from the sea in Scotland, I would have guessed it was from the coast. Dark, rich chocolate behind a sweet but sour heart. Plus linseed oil with a malty top layer. Palate: Soft, balanced, and sweet with a pleasant mouthfeel and cinnamon spices. Chocolate limes, caramel, and lemon cream form the body. There are also notes of oak, grass, and burnt hay, reminiscent of a campfire. Finish: Medium to long-lasting with grassy peat smoke, citrus peel, dark chocolate, licorice, and long-lasting earthiness. Rating: I wasn't sure what to expect, but this is exactly right. Young and fresh, but nicely weighted with the sherry influences. Spicy, smoky, and flavorful. Tasting Notes by Blog.TheWhiskyExchange.com

Tasting 2

Nose: Very strong peat, organic (leafy) and sour (with some lime). Becoming sweeter and maltier, then aromas of lye and lemon unfold. After a while, vanilla notes appear on the palate and in the nose. Becoming saltier and more integrated with the addition of some water. Palate: Initially coal smoke and ash with some sweetness. No other flavors initially, but the existing ones are really good. A little later, organic hints (wet leaves and compost), vanilla and lime develop. Even later, saltier. And a little later, the vanilla becomes stronger. With the addition of water, again less vanilla, but sharp with sour smoke. Finish: Long-lasting. Ashy, lingering smoke. Salt crystals pop. With some water, lime and wet gravel with smoke. Tasting Notes by MyAnnoyingOpinions.com
